Without proper brushing and flossing, you have a much higher chance of developing periodontal disease. In fact, almost half of adults 30 years and older have some form of it already, and they might not even know it. At Pottstown Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we can diagnose and treat the problem before it becomes serious.

What is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease (gum disease) is an infection of the gums that gradually destroys the support of your natural teeth. In its earliest stages, you typically won’t notice any symptoms, which is why you should be seeing a dentist at least every six months for an oral exam. Once the condition worsens, your teeth will begin to feel loose, and they even have a chance of falling out.

Some of the most common symptoms include:

  • Gums that bleed easily
  • Red, swollen, or tender gums
  • Gums that have pulled away from your teeth
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Loose or separating teeth
  • A change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite

Bacteria found in plaque produce toxins that irritate the gums, which may cause them to turn red, swell, and bleed easily. If this irritation is prolonged, the gums separate from the teeth, causing pockets to form. As periodontal diseases progress, the supporting gum tissue and bone that hold teeth in place deteriorate. If left untreated, this leads to tooth loss.

Why is Oral Hygiene So Important?

Three out of four adults are affected by gum disease at some point in their life, but it is possible to avoid it by flossing every day and brushing for two minutes twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Otherwise, you risk plaque and bacteria being buried below the gum line.

We can treat this using a process called scaling and root planing, but we’d much rather help you maintain your healthy smile than need to resort to restorative procedures.
